Ex-ASFC Art student Kyle Galloway has been in the press recently with his forthcoming exhibition at York College from September 13th to October 11th 2012; “A Well Known Saying Said in Reverse” features Kyle’s installation work “Galloway’s assembled sculptures involve absurd juxtapositions of objects, from pieces of fruit to domestic appliances. There is a humour in the revelation of the dumbness of objects.”. Follow his work on his website.

its the BIG DAY tomorrow !

Helen will be in room 2.15 if you need advice or help (Helen there from 10.45 til 2.15 thereabouts) but other staff are there from 8.15 am. Results are online from 6am so you can get up uber-early to check them out but here’s a gratutitous picture of a very happy cat to prove how confident we are that you will all succeed !

Harriet from Manchester Art Gallery brought her portable darkroom along last week - to show our photography students the rudimentaries of darkroom photography. As most of the students have been working with digital lens based media, it was a great opportunity to learn about the possibilities of experimentation with exposure & use of chemicals.

We love hearing from our ex students & we were especially pleased to bump into Vicky Mellor at the MMU degree show this week. Vicky , along with Laura Faithfull & Sara Al-Shalakhty were graduating from the Embroidery & Textiles for fashion degrees & were exhibiting their work.

All the girls were students at ASFC studying on our specialist full time art programmes. Their work was diverse & ranged from Vicky’s beautifully graphic birds which she has expanded into a range of giftwrap, Laura’s delicate lasercut window blinds & Sara’s luscious & colourful fashion prints. Best of luck girls with the future - we are very proud of you.

The AS fine art visited the Manchester Gallery as research for their Personal Investigation project this week. The main focus of the visit was to see the “We face forward : Art from West Africa today” http://www.wefaceforward.org/art

The exhibition features “contemporary art from West Africa, shown across three venues: Manchester Art Gallery, Whitworth Art Gallery and the Gallery of Costume, Platt Hall. It features painting, photography, textiles, sculpture, video and sound work from 32 artists from 9 countries in West Africa.”
The students were impressed by the diversity of the work - from the metal embroidery work of El Anatsui to the striking & powerful photography work of George Osodi. Catch this exhibition if you are able - its open until Sept 2012. The exhibition was interestingly in contrast to a smaller gallery exhibition of posters from the Empire Marketing board - stunningly beautiful images with a backbone of oppression which makes for a thought provoking visit for any art student.

For all you graphic & packaging hounds out there - I was sauntering through my local supermarket tonight (“every little helps”) & saw Kelloggs 1950s Retro packaging to celebrate the Jubilee / England team / Olympics (delete as appropriate) . I was quite impressed by the subtle changes that they’ve made over the years without diluting the brand. I walked around the store & looked at which other brands were jumping on the Jubilee bandwagon.

Ma’amite - very clever (although at £2.80 a jar, I wasn’t buying)

Gordons Gin - Union Jack Green - retaining brand values

Les Cadburys Fingres - Simple & a nice strapline (at this point the store detectives were following me …)

PG tips - green again, souvenir tin & a sweet illustration of monkey to boot

Plenty Kitchen rolls - a tad nasty & the “Fat rolls” just put me right off

but as for the Pampers Active fit … Limited edition nappies ? I’m sure Her Majesty will be giving that the Royal seal of approval any time now…
